A lot of tourists in Minsk try to find the National Library. And it’s an easy task as every citizen knows this landmark. The National Library of Belarus is a multifunctional complex. It is the main universal scientific library and a educational, cultural and political hub. The history of the Library begins in 1922 as a department of the Belarusian State University, In 1926 it became an independent institution. Unfortunately, after the Second World War, only 320 thousand of 2 million books survived. Later the funds were restored. The new library’s building was opened in 2006.
5000 people participated in its construction. Have you noticed an unusual shape of the library? It is rombokubooktaedr - a complex geometrix figure consisting of 18 squares and 8 triangles. The library’s walls are covered with a heat-reflecting mirror glass. The building has 23 floors and its height is 73 and a half meters. The original exterior lights are switched on every evening at sunset and work until midnight. There are 20 reading rooms on the first three floors. Customers can get a book using an automated delivery system for 20 minutes. The length of all bookshelves here is about ninety kilometers. The diamond is a depository with a capacity of 14 million books. Currently, there are about 10 million copies in more than 80 languages.
90 thousand books are rare ones and manuscripts. Pay your attention to a monument in front of the building. It is Francysk Skaryna, the Belarusian printing pioneer. The main entrance resembles an open book with quotes from his translation of the Bible in 19 languages. They are carved into the walls and encourage people to learn. An interesting fact is that the library holds the 24th place in the world’s top 50 unusual buildings. There is a beautiful landscape around the library which you can admire from a public open-air observation deck.
